“The Barn” is the nickname for the Westminster addition and renovation project – recognized as a 2022 Housing Design Awards finalist in the $250,001 to $400,000 renovation category.
Originally built in the 1950s and later remodeled in the 1990s, this McKellar Park bungalow was due for a complete transformation. Revision Built led the charge, working closely with a local architect, our in-house graphic designer, a wonderfully talented kitchen designer and fabricator, valued trade partners, and our own construction team to bring the vision to life.
Design began in October 2020, with demolition starting January 18, 2021, and substantial completion achieved by May 21, 2021. The family of four stayed in our Airbnb during construction, making the transition seamless. The project’s nickname, The Barn, came from one of the children – first inspired by the straw insulation used during the foundation pour, and later reinforced by the signature barn door added to the pantry.
This project was delivered in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought no shortage of challenges. Despite that, the experience was a success for everyone involved. Along the way, we uncovered and resolved hidden problems left behind by previous renovations, including structural deterioration from water leaks and shoddy “flipper” work. In the end, the result was not just a beautiful home, but a stronger, healthier one built to last.
